About Waka Toa - Waka Toa Endorsements - History of Waka Toa - Whaitiripapa Pa - Gallery

Waka Toa weaves together the rich performance tradition of the Maori with a unique life giving message in an authentic encounter with Maori culture.

Fun, educational and entertaining, Waka Toa performances are an experience for people of all ages.

This summer - visit Whaitiripapa Pa, the remains of an historic Maori pa (defensive earthworks), high in the hills of the Knapdale Forest.

Members of the Gisborne based Waka Toa Maori cultural group will welcome you on to the site and explain its history and significance. Gisborne Maori Performance Group Tours are available by arrangement for Friday and Saturday starting at 6:00pm. Tickets are available from Gisborne i-Site, Portside Gisborne Hotel, Stephens Photo Plus or Knapdale Eco Lodge.

For larger & smaller visitor groups an authentic personalised Maori cultural performance can be organised on the eastern approach to Whaitiripapa Pa with the Gisborne flats and the Pacific Ocean as a stunning background.

Gisborne Maori Cultural Performances take 2.5 hours in total including guided tours through native New Zealand forest with explanations of ferns and plants used by Maori for medicinal purposes. The walking tour requires a certain level of fitness. If necessary easier routes are available. Hand out notes containing schematic layout of the pa site and Maori translation are included.
